Where Should I Socialize My Puppy?

Training Questions: Where Should I Socialize My Puppy?

What is socialization and where does it happen? It is the process of exposing your puppy to people, places, sounds, sights and smells when they are young. The idea is that this exposure, combined with consistent puppy training, will help create a confident, friendly dog that can follow your directions in a variety of settings. I have written about this subject in several blog posts, which led to one reader to ask the following:

You have mentioned before how important it is to socialize young puppies by taking them to different places to experience people, smells, etc. But you have also said to not take puppies to dog parks. Isn’t this contradictory?

Bergamasco Sheepdog

The Breed
The Bergamasco is an ancient shepherding breed which traces its origins back thousands of years. Believed to have originated in Persia (in the area that is now Iran), hardy, vigorous shepherding dogs worked with their nomadic masters, tending and herding flocks of sheep in the harsh mountain climates from Persia west to Europe. Certain of these nomads ultimately settled in the Italian Alps and remained there; their dogs became what is now known as the Bergamasco.

Begging at the Table

Using Extinction for Begging at the Table

This past weekend, I was invited to dinner at the home of friend. My friend is a real southern lady with a house that looks like it came straight off the pages of an interior design magazine. Everything about the evening was perfect from the party decorations to the carefully chosen music playing in the background. Well, everything was perfect that is, until we sat down to eat.
With a fresh blue tablecloth, the table was set for spring. The food looked delicious. And then I noticed there was warm air on my arm. I looked down to see the huge brown eyes of a furry sheepdog.

To find out what happened next, and to get great tips on correcting such a problem click here.

4 Steps To A Potty-Trained Puppy

If you have a new puppy in your home one of the first things you want to accomplish is potty train your puppy. No one wants their home to smell like a kennel and constantly cleaning up potty accidents after a puppy gets annoying and stressful.

Most dog owners know that puppies don’t understand that they have done anything wrong. It is their natural instinct to potty when they need to. The connection between the brain of a puppy and the bladder and bowel doesn’t really start to mature until closer to 4 months of age. So puppies have to be taught potty training. Here are some tips that will make this easier for you:

Socializing A Puppy

Do You Know the Critical Time Frame
For Socializing A Puppy?

Did you know when the window of opportunity to socialize your puppy begins to close? If you said 6-9 months you are way too late.

It is critically important to begin socializing your puppy before four months of age. If you wait beyond this point to begin training your puppy how to act outside the home and with other people, he may become fearful. Why?

Training

What kind of schooling has your dog received?  (ex. puppy kindergarten, competition obedience classes, CGC, Agility, performance training, etc.)  What type of class has your dog and household benefitted from the most?

Dog Behavior: What Not To Do With An Anxious Dog

When dogs are anxious, many people innocently begin to try to calm or soothe them by petting their dog. Although this may seem the proper reaction, it actually enforces the anxiety. Your words, voice and attention actually make the dog feel that being anxious is okay.

So, how do you avoid this, and help your dog become a relaxed, happy dog?

Icelandic Sheepdog

A Long History
The Icelandic Sheepdog is new to the AKC, but the breed's roots go back more than a thousand years. According to the ISAA, the dog emigrated from Nordic countries to Iceland, where he was used to guard and heard not only sheep, but also cattle and horses. Little is mentioned of the dogs until the mid-16th century, when Swedish clergyman Olaus Magnus wrote that Icelandic Sheepdogs, which he described as thick-coated white or light-colored animals, were popular among the Swedish upper class, especially women and priest. In 1570, British humanist John Caius noted that the British aristocracy also favored the breed.

TripleSure: Amazing Natural Flea Control & Multi-Tick Remedy Spray On

TripleSure® natural flea control and tick killer is an oil-in-water solution that you spray on your pet. TripleSure® is a healthy, convenient, premium product made with the same high standards as those applied to products made for human use.

Every two weeks, depending on your pet’s outdoor activities, spray liberally but not to the point of saturation. Begin spraying your pet at the tail and continue with the entire coat, including legs and under body. Then pamper your pet by hand fluffing the fur in the opposite direction it normally lays to assure penetration to the skin.

The active ingredients in TripleSure® are organic and natural. Contact with your skin or your pet’s skin is harmless. Your home will fill with the rich aroma of cedar oil and peppermint oil, like a log cabin filled with candy canes.

And unlike the toxic chemical brand name pesticides, our “mode of action” for killing fleas and ticks is NOT through the product entering your pet’s blood stream. Instead, TripleSure® kills fleas and ticks on contact, then is absorbed into the animal’s hair follicles like thousands of tiny wicks to create a no-entry barrier to insects.
